Spill Barrier Compliance

Spill Containment Solutions!

Chemical spills and contaminated fire sprinkler water create safety risks to people and can adversely impact the environment.  Companies are continuing to be held to higher expectations to prevent chemical spills from escaping their facilities and can incur significant financial liability for an incident.

Containment requirements come in the form of regulatory requirements as well as insurance company requirements due to the high cost and liability for spills.  These requirements exist in a wide range of industries including warehouses, distilleries, refineries, chemical plants, hazardous material facilities and automotive facilities.

Standards for Spill Containment

Standards for Spill Containment

  • NFPA-30:  The National Fire Prevention Association’s code for flammable and combustible liquids calls for a suitable means to prevent the flow of liquids into adjacent building areas in emergency conditions.

  • OSHA 1910.106:  The Occupational Safety and Health Act’s standard for Hazardous Materials calls for the retention of flammable or combustible liquid leakage and fire protection water in a safe location.

  • IFC Chapter 50:  The International Fire Code for Hazardous Material calls for secondary containment for indoor storage areas be designed to contain a spill from the largest vessel plus the flow of fire protection water.

Containment Approaches

A traditional approach to spill containment is through the use of a permanent physical barrier such as a concrete curb or wall around the containment area and the use of ramps or steps to provide access.  While this approach is effective for containment, it often leads to long-term losses in productivity with personnel movement and transport of equipment over the curbs.

Spill barriers are an excellent way to protect facilities and the environment while also maintaining high productivity.  Spill barriers allow for floor-level openings in containment curbs and walls.  These openings allow easy transit of personnel and fork trucks to maintain plant productivity.  Spill barriers provide an effective way to prevent the flow of hazardous chemicals to other parts of the facility and prevent the spread of a fire.  These barriers also prevent damage to adjacent areas when a fire sprinkler is activated.

Manual Spill Barriers

Manual spill barriers are applicable to openings with low volume of traffic.  Manual barriers are maintained in the closed position to protect against a spill and only opened for transit through the opening and then returned to the closed position after the transit is complete.  Manual barriers are dependent on operators returning the barrier to the closed position after an opening for transit.

Automatic Spill Barriers

Automatic spill barriers offer a truly fail-safe system and are the preferred solution.  Automatic barriers can remain in the open position to provide clear transit through the opening for personnel and fork trucks.  In the event of an incident, the area is fully protected through automatic barrier closure.  The barrier closure can be triggered by a facility alarm system or the detection of a spill.  Additionally, the automatic barriers can be locally activated through the push of a button.
